Los Robles Health System Performs Region's First Thoracic Branch Endoprosthesis
This summer, Los Robles Health System successfully completed its first-ever minimally invasive Thoracic Branch Endoprosthesis (TBE) procedure, a next-generation minimally invasive repair for patients living with dangerous conditions of the thoracic aorta. Vascular Surgeon Dr. Nishant Sharma led the vascular team at Los Robles Hospital through the milestone case. The procedure is not only a first for Los Robles, but also marks the first procedure in our region, making care more accessible to those suffering from complex aortic disease.
“Los Robles is committed to providing the communities we serve with the latest treatment options,” stated Phil Buttell, CEO of Los Robles Health System. “It makes our team so proud to offer breakthrough procedures that offer our local communities quality care that is accessible and close to home. We truly have some of the most talented physicians and medical professionals on our team and it is always extremely rewarding to see new procedures added to the list of services we provide to our patients and community.”
The inaugural case involved a patient with a thoracic aortic aneurysm that required not only repair of the diseased aorta but also preservation of vital blood flow to side branches — a challenge traditionally requiring open chest surgery at large academic centers. Using the newest branch stent graft technology, the Los Robles vascular team successfully repaired the aneurysm through a small incision in the groin, avoiding open-heart surgery. The patient recovered well and is now home.
The breakthrough case gives hope to patients suffering from thoracic aortic aneurysms, a bulge that is found in the main artery that can rupture and is also a viable treatment option for aortic dissections and traumatic aortic injuries. Left untreated, these conditions can be silent but deadly, often leading to sudden internal bleeding.
“This is the type of breakthrough that saves lives,” stated Dr. Sharma. “I am proud to work with a dedicated team at Los Robles to expand the treatments available for our community and to bring the highest level of vascular expertise to our patients.”
Los Robles Health System continues in its commitment to advance its capabilities in vascular and endovascular care, ensuring patients have access to innovative procedures without leaving the region.
